The Buchanan family reels from Asa’s revelation that Max is his son. Max asks what kind of mind games Asa is playing, but the old man insists he is telling the truth. Renee asks Max to calm down and hear Asa out. Asa explains about the letter he found in his files and what it claimed. Clint sends the kids out as Asa and Renee tell the rest of the family about their trip to Sweetwater and what the midwife told them there. Asa denies any wrongdoing in his business dealings but he accepts responsibility for what happened with Patricia and welcomes Max into the family. Max, who has been silent throughout all of this, says he had a father who loved him and raised him, Wingate, and that’s all the father he needs. Max doesn’t believe that an old letter and the memories of a midwife constitute proof, but Asa says there’s more, and presents the letters Patricia wrote to Max over the years which confess his true parentage. Max asks Gabrielle how Asa got his hands on the letters she promised to burn. She says she has no idea how he got the letters, but admits she couldn’t bring herself to burn them in case he changed his mind someday. Renee tries to broker a peace between Max and Asa but Max says he’ll never be Asa’s son. He storms out and Gabrielle follows him, pleading for him to come back and reconsider. Jake and the EMTs arrive at the hospital with Charlotte. Dan examines Charlotte and says they will have to remove her spleen and even then her life is in jeopardy. He takes Charlotte into the O.R. Carlo arrives looking for his daughter. When he sees Jake, Carlo attacks him, blaming Jake for Charlotte’s injuries. Jake points the finger back at Carlo, saying none of this would have happened if he hadn’t gone into business with Porter. Larry has to pull the two men apart and remind them that Charlotte is fighting for her life right now and their energy might be better put towards praying for her recovery. To that end, once Carlo has calmed down, he asks Larry to show him to the chapel. Before Nighthawk loses radio communication, Sarah tells Bo to always remember she loves him. The superintendent tries to reestablish a radio connection with Nighthawk, but to no avail. The chase plane the Navy sent up says the plane disintegrated and there is no chance of survival. Bo is in denial, and wants the Coast Guard to confirm, but his request is denied. Bo refuses to believe Sarah is dead. Rika and Laura Jean show up at the E.R.. Rika says Laura sprained her wrist and needs an x-ray, but Laura says she just fell and bruised it a little. Dan has a nurse take Laura for imaging, and Rika tells him the wrist isn’t Laura’s only problem; she’s up to her eyes in trouble.
Alex brings Megan to the hospital and asks Jake to look after her. Jake asks what’s happened and she tells him Sarah is dead. Larry examines her and confirms she is experiencing post-traumatic shock. Megan blames herself for Sarah’s fate, but Jake says he didn’t do enough to find her. Megan doesn’t know what she’s going to do with herself now that Sarah is gone. Renee counsels that Asa and Max have expended enough energy yelling at each other and it’s time for both of them to put the past behind them. Rafe doesn’t understand how Max’s mother could have kept this secret for so many years, but Tina (thinking of her own situation) says she understands why Patricia might have done what she did. The powwow is interrupted when Clint gets a call from Larry who asks him to come to the hospital and says he has bad news about Sarah. Rafe accompanies Clint, leaving the others behind to discuss the evening’s fallout. Tina suggests Gabrielle has wanted to be a Buchanan for a long time and she must feel like she won the lottery tonight. Back at home, Max asks Gabrielle again: how did Asa get his hands on the letters. Gabrielle says she has no idea, but she suggests he could have hired someone to break in and search the place. Gabrielle says this works both ways–as Asa’s son, he’s entitled to wealth and prestige. Max says he doesn’t want anything from Asa. While Gabrielle puts Al to bed, Max finally reads one of the letters from his mother. At the Llanview PD, Troy questions Porter, but Porter refuses to talk. At the airport, Bo keeps trying to contact the search and rescue team, while Clint and Rafe try to convince him to accept Sarah’s fate. Alex says she spoke to the Coast Guard who just sighted the wreckage off the Carolina coast. Bo vows that someone will pay for this, even if it takes him the rest of his life. Dan tells Jake that Charlotte is going to be weak for some time, but she is going to pull through. Megan overhears Jake telling Dan that things turned sour between the two of them and he got lucky when Charlotte came into his life. She runs off, upset, and Jake follows her.
