For May 5th...On This Day in Disney History in 1987, Disney Dollars were introduced to guests at Disneyland. Disney Dollars were a form of corporate scrip sold by The Walt Disney Company and redeemable for goods or services at many Disney facilities. Spearheaded by late Disney Legend Jack Lindquist, the program represented one of the first instances of a private organization printing its own money and having it accepted in theme parks like the U.S. Dollar. Similar in size, shape and design to the paper currency of the United States, most bills bear the image of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, or Pluto. This currency was accepted at the company's U.S. theme parks, Disney cruise ships, the Disney Store and at certain parts of Castaway Cay, Disney's private island in the Caribbean. The bills originally came in $1 and $5 denominations. In 1990, Disney added a $10 bill, issued to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of the opening of Disneyland. For Mickey Mouse's 65th birthday in 1993, a special Disney dollar was issued. Walt Disney World started with the currency being used at Epcot on October 2. The currency was discontinued by Disney on May 14, 2016…but can still be used in the parks….if you have them!
