You reach lvl 9 in Chapter 1 and can reach lvl 14 before even beginning Chapter 2 with just beating Farnirras.

He has pretty bad reflex saves, so skilling Spell Focus + Greater SF Conjuration and Heighten Spell Acid Pit, he will eventually fall in the pit. You need a extended meta magic rod for more duration. Cast invisible to reset the fight and to save the game. Do that 3 times and he should be dead.

Loot all the stuff, it means additional 200k+ that come in handy.
