My name is John Zimmer. I'm the owner of Sound Representation, which specializes in the sale of high-end audio equipment. I really learned everything that I know about high-end audio from working at this store that we're sitting in right now, Stereo Exchange. I'm going to teach you what to look for when you want to shop for a stereo.

First of all, HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. An HDMI cable is capable of passing high definition video as well as audio over one cable. One important distinction is whether or not it's classified as a high speed, or a standard HDMI cable. A standard HDMI cable means that it will pass signals up to 720p or 1080i resolutions. If, on the other hand, you have a Blu-Ray player, that's passing the highest quality video, which is 1080p, you'll need what's called a high speed HDMI cable. Inexpensive HDMI cables are okay for short runs, but once you go over 10 or 15 feet, you really need a higher quality HDMI cable.
