Hashima Island (Gunkanjima) off Nagasaki, Japan, was the most densely populated place on Earth in 1959 — 5,300 people crammed onto just 16 acres of concrete.
Mitsubishi turned a barren rock into a self-contained city to mine undersea coal: apartments, school, hospital, movie theater, pachinko parlor — everything.
Life ran on coal dust and strict schedules.
During WWII, hundreds of Korean and Chinese forced laborers suffered and died there.
Then cheap oil arrived. The mine closed. On April 20, 1974, the last ferry left. Residents took almost nothing. Bowls stayed full. A single red child’s shoe waited in a hallway.
Fifty years later, the island is crumbling into the sea — UNESCO site, tourist boats circle, but no one lands.
