Today, we'll analyze an exciting chess game between the current World Chess Championship challenger, Gukesh, and the former World Champion, Magnus Carlsen. This online blitz game, played in 2021, features Gukesh playing as White and Carlsen as Black.

Gukesh opened with 1.d4, the Queen's Pawn Game, to which Carlsen responded with a simple yet powerful setup—GM Smirnov's favorite opening against 1.d4—the Benko Gambit.

The Benko Gambit arises after the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5. Here's the most interesting part: Black's second move, 2...c5, makes this one of the only openings where Black has won more games than White after 1.d4, giving it the highest win rate for Black against this opening.

The primary idea behind the Benko Gambit is that Black sacrifices a pawn to gain a significant lead in development, making it difficult for White to develop normally.

In this game, Carlsen played a slightly different move order, setting up a solid version of the Benko Gambit that provides even more flexibility for Black. Watch the full video lesson to learn this powerful opening and witness an intense battle between two brilliant chess minds.
