According to the Berlin Concussion consensus statement, symptoms for head injuries should resolve within 2 to 4 weeks. When they do not resolve this is categorized as post concussive syndrome. These symptoms can continue for a few months and in some cases for years after a head injury. This is why we must ask the question why is it that some individuals recover quickly and others go for years with serious debilitating symptoms. These symptoms can include the following:


Dizziness
Headaches
Fatigue
Brain fog
Anxiety
Depression
Weakness
Memory issues

Post concussive syndrome symptoms are not limited to the list above but these are very common symptoms patients experience. Although many patients with concussions experience headaches it does not mean that their headaches are coming from the same place and that there is a universal treatment that will work for both of them.

One of the most common conditions that is seen clinically and unfortunately missed far too often is Dyaustnomia. What is dysautonomia? Most simply put, dysautonomia is dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system has many important roles in helping individuals function properly, they include the following:

Heart Rate
Blood Pressure
Breathing rate
Sweating
Production of saliva in the mouth
Digestion
Sexual arousal

These are all functions that are out of conscious control and when they don't function correctly they can wreak havoc on an individual and their post concussive symptoms. Symptoms of dysautonomia include:

Fatigue
Brain fog
Dizziness with changing positions
Anxiety
Digestive issues
Abnormal sweating
Headaches
Heart racing (tachycardia)
Fainting with standing

Between 1.7 and 3 million sports related concussions occur every year. Of those cases upwards of 11 percent state symptoms of dysautonomia within 3 month of the initial injury.
