In 2020, after over 19 years of delays, the long-awaited public swimming pool in Dimapur was inaugurated with much fanfare. Funded by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and constructed under a Public-Private Partnership model, the project was meant to be a boon for the community, providing access to sport and recreation. The Nagaland Youth Gymnastic Club (NYGC), led by Toshirenla Ao, persevered through bureaucratic hurdles to complete the pool. However, despite the optimism of its inauguration, the pool now stands neglected. Intended to serve the public year-round, the lack of a dome, which was to make it an all-weather facility, remains unaddressed. The minimal fee of Rs 250 per person for yearly access, announced in 2020, hasn’t translated into sustained use or maintenance.
