Halloween is rolling in, let the spookiness begin!

This month I’ll be doing something a little different: several different lists to commemorate this most spirited season of them all. And for starters, a little something different: a trilogy of video compilation lists dedicated to one of my all time favorite tropes: The Evil Laugh.

The Evil Laugh is one of those wonderful cliches that shows no sign of dying, because by God, we don’t WANT it to die. But something I think many people may not realize is that, aside from just sounding awesome (or hilarious, depending on the situation), the way a character laughs says a LOT about that character. This is especially true of villains; various media have given us a great number of iconic cacklers, chucklers, and chortlers, all worth their own diabolical salt.

So, what better time than the time of all things fiendish to celebrate this cliche? And to start off with, let’s go with the company that, perhaps more than any other, has MASTERED villains and their laughs: Disney. Disney has given us many a memorable baddy over the ages, and almost all of them, at some point or another, seem compelled to let out a devilish laugh. Their laughter comes in varying volumes and contexts, but each one says a lot about the character and what’s going on with them.
