Chinese film director and screenwriter Jia Zhangke was awarded the Carrosse d’Or(Golden Carriage) prize at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival on Thursday.

Jia received the award at the Cannes Film Festival Directors’ Fortnight opening ceremony. As the first Chinese director who got honored, Jia said the award has a very special meaning for him.

“I think this encouragement comes just in time. I’m 45 years old now, and I spent the last 17 years making films. The award is a summary of my past work, and it’s also an incentive for my future works,” he said.

In a published extract of a letter sent to Jia by the SRF board, the guild explained why it had chosen him for the honor by citing the “boldness” of his films and said it wished to “acknowledge the committed, independent, poetic and visionary artistry.”

Jia is a regular attendee at Cannes. His film "A Touch of Sin" won the best screenplay at Cannes in 2013 and the director was on the official competition jury members last year.

Edousard Waintrop, general representative of the Director’s Fortnight, sang high praise for Jia and his achievement.

“It is difficult to gain good reputation from your peers. I think the great glory has been given to a great filmmaker. Jia made breakthroughs in each one of his movies. He can always show his observation to his country in many different ways. He had great talent and attainments,”said Waintrop.

In addition to the honor, Jia’s 2000 film “Platform” was screened on the ceremony followed by a master class.

“Golden Carriage Award” is “Directors’ Fortnight” created by Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002, by the French Directors Guild Award, in recognition of the purpose of “pure cinema genius” award its name from the French film master Jean Renoir’s masterpiece. Previously, Clint Eastwood, Nanni Moretti, David Cronenberg, Jim Jarmusch, Jane Campion and other masters of cinema had been awarded this honor.
