गरुड़ पुराण के अनुसार, मृत्यु के तेरहवें दिन आत्मा को सूक्ष्म शरीर प्राप्त होता है। इसके बाद यमदूत आत्मा को यमलोक की ओर ले जाते हैं। यह मार्ग पापी आत्माओं के लिए अत्यंत भयंकर और कष्टकारी होता है, जबकि पुण्य आत्माओं के लिए प्रकाशमय और सरल।
इस यात्रा में आत्मा को कांटों, कीलों, जलते अंगारों और पिघले लोहे से गुजरना पड़ता है। पृथ्वी से यमलोक की दूरी 86,000 योजन बताई गई है, जिसे आत्मा लगभग 348 दिनों में पूरा करती है।
यह कथा हमें याद दिलाती है कि मृत्यु अंत नहीं, बल्कि कर्मों का परिणाम है जो आत्मा को मृत्यु के बाद भी भुगतना पड़ता है।

According to the Garuda Purana, on the 13th day after death, the soul receives a subtle body. After this, Yamdoots take the soul towards Yamlok. For sinful souls, the journey is terrifying and full of suffering, while for virtuous souls it becomes bright and smooth.
The soul has to walk through thorns, nails, burning embers, and molten iron. The distance from Earth to Yamlok is said to be 86,000 yojanas, which the soul covers in about 348 days.
This story reminds us that death is not the end, but the beginning of reaping the results of our deeds.
