This video shows the process I went through to figure out how to put a 21 mm Dellorto PHBG carb on a '96 Tomos Targa LX (a35 engine airsal 70cc bore kit) with a big intake and custom modified STOCK airbox with 2 calculated snorkels (math and reasoning explained). **Thanks to treatland and Benji for the carb, the advice and the great prices on these parts and parts for 3 other bikes I've been working on.
The MAIN POINT of this is to show that you can keep a moped QUIET while making it just as fast as with a wide open, unnecessarily high-flow LOUD intake. Mine has the power to compete with other tuned mopeds if i switched the 28-22 sprockets to a 31-20 setup (~58 mph) but I enjoy being able to pull up hills, as I was showing in one part at the end, so I do indeed keep it at a 28-22 setup, and the biturbo keeps the powerband high giving me a nice feel of torque between about 30 and 40 mph, with a top of 45+ and who needs faster than that anyway?
Carb setup:
40 idle jet
60 choke jet
80 main jet
W16 needle (on purpose not W7, although probably start with W7 as suggested on mopedarmy since it kicks in a bit later and is leaner, but i was suprised how well the w16 worked); Needle's on 2nd to leanest clip (I know I said leanest, but I tuned it a bit more after making the video by raising the needle one clip since it's now fall and I like to run a bit richer to match the colder and therefore denser air)
Premixing 40:1, as always, and still getting about 94 miles per gallon, which is less than the 110 mpg it gets stock, but who cares! That's still insanely good! It keeps up with traffic anywhere except the highway and can go about 4 times as far on each gallon than all the cars around it.
DISCLAIMER: (seriously, the following is true. I'm not just saying it): This is a for-fun bike, not a commuter, YET. Although I tested it on the road in the video, I have an identical one I ride to work instead, most days, which is unmodified and is fully legal, and I even have moped insurance for that one which isn't even required, but it's cheap and I am responsible. Soon I will register the targa lx in this video, which as you can see is a highly modified bike, as a small home-made motorcycle and I'll get plates, a bike license and insurance so I can legally blast through traffic, but for now it's a project and garaged. I do not, in any way, endorse breaking any 50cc state laws, noise restriction laws, or speed limits. I only endorse creativity and ingenuity, and then sharing what you have learned on your own with others. Also, please be safe: wear the right equipment, and remember that if your bike can go fast, it better stop fast too, aka make sure your brakes are up to speck, not worn down, and are properly tightened at all times.
