On November 20, 1975, Braniff International's second flying mobile, designed by Master Alexander Calder, a Boeing 727-291 registered as N408BN departed Dallas/Ft Worth Regional Airport on its first scheduled flight. The flight officially began the Flying Colors Campaign that celebrated the 200th Anniversary of our nation's birth throughout the remainder of 1975 and during all of 1976.

The Calder 727 was the centerpiece of a series of ceremonies at each Braniff destination where the aircraft first visited. Forty domestic Braniff destinations welcomed a visit from the exciting Flying Colors of the United States Boeing trijet where well wishers and local dignitaries heralded the beginning of the Bicentennial celebration with the arrival of the Calder painted jet. The patriotic red, white and blue airliner flew over 15,000 route miles between Braniff's forty domestic destinations and was seen by over 1 million people during 1976 alone.

While the Calder 727 was the only Braniff jet painted in the Bicentennial scheme, all seventy Braniff Boeing 727 aircraft received unique Flying Colors titles in white on the center engine nacelle to identify the excitement of the Bicentennial celebration. McDonnell Douglas DC-8-62 Intercontinental Jets were scheduled to have the Flying Colors titles placed just under the cockpit windows on each side but it was ultimately decided that they would only be applied to the 727 fleet. A new slogan was adopted for the airline that served to impress upon on customers that Braniff had once again reinvented airline service and recommitted itself to providing the best service possible:
