I've seen Ryan live 5 times and each gig was unique, but this was by far the best one. I'm grateful for the recording, whoever made it available. While I don't own this recording, I certainly hope it doesn't get taken down. Anyone who loves music should hear it. And if anyone loves a good bootleg, it's DRA himself!
In my opinion, this is the definitive Cardinals line-up featuring the astounding vocals and guitar playing by the late Neal Casal and sensitive bass playing & BVs by the late Chris Feinstein. Jon Graboff on pedal steel adds his emotive playing, lower harmonies and humour. Drummer Brad Pemberton glues it all together with his solid groove, as always.
The Cardinals first played in New Zealand on August 16, 2007 at the Bruce Mason Centre and while that was a good gig, the set-list seemed heavy on deeper cuts from lesser known albums and the banter was minimal (though I was blown away by the harmonies and musicianship). So their second visit to Auckland (Feb 4, 2009), heard here at the Powerstation, was a real treat starting with I See Monsters from Love is Hell and peppering the set list with fan favourites such as Come Pick Me Up, When the Stars Go Blue, and his brooding cover of Wonderwall. Extended jams are to be expected from the Cardinals and this was another highlight. Combine this with a band in high spirits and hilarious banter, it was a gig to never forget.
While this recording is a good memento (even with minimal bass), you can't beat being there and I remember how I felt in the room hearing Neal sing the harmony originally sung by Emmylou Harris on Oh My Sweet Carolina. Not sure if I've felt that before or since. Simply sublime and worth the ticket price alone. Hearing it now, knowing he's no longer with us, adds another element altogether. There's a reason why Ryan gave time in the set for two songs written and sung by Neal.
Band introductions turned into impromptu theme songs is further evidence of a group of guys at the end of a tour, at the height of their careers, who love what they do and are great at doing it.
