''At first glance, the most enticing element of the Fendi Spring/Summer 2023 collection is its delicious color palette. Between the neutrals—in rich tones of warm gray, barely-there pink, camel, calico, cream, caramel, cappuccino, chocolate—and the pops of color in watermelon, pistachio and mint, and cornflower blue, designer Kim Jones forged an entire gelateria from his latest collection for Milan Fashion Week.
For inspiration, Jones had to look no further than the house’s archives and its history of strong women whose influences continuously enrich the Fendi legacy. “What is particularly interesting to me about Fendi is exploring the notion of functional utility alongside femininity.” Among the Fendi women—and there are many—there’s no shortage of source material, from the Fendi Five to the present influences of Silvia Venturini Fendi and her daughter, Delfina Delettrez, to the current partnership with supermodel Linda Evangelista that marked her comeback to the fashion industry after a long battle with self-image and a hiatus from modeling. The House of Fendi is known for its feminine touch, and rather than shy away from delicacy, Jones takes it by the horns, communicating power through structured sinuosity.

The collection is reminiscent of turn of the millennium fashion, capturing futuristic minimalism crossed with the sort of “I don’t care” air of a generation caught up in a total cultural revolution (not unlike the state of upheaval that young people are experiencing today). Yet there is an element of technicality which sets it apart, a touch that is distinctly Fendi and distinctly now. Rigid elements become instantly malleable, like the incorporation of an obi style belt, chunky “F” hardware, or a platform sneaker or sandal, choices that ground the looks rather than stiffen them….''
