Fighting Debris in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed

The Chesapeake Bay watershed encompasses 64,000 mi2 of land and the homes of over 18 million people; the unfortunate truth is that this population is the cause of a lot of trash in local waters and the Bay. Whether we’re talking about plastic straws, disposable masks, fishing line, or derelict crab traps, tons of debris end up in the Chesapeake Bay each year. Where is it coming from, what are its impacts, and what can we do to tackle the debris problem?

Speakers:
- Kelly Somers, Senior Watershed Coordinator, EPA Region 3 Water Division and Co-chair, Chesapeake Bay Program Plastic Pollution Action Team
- Renee Sanders, Center for Coastal Resources Management, VIMS
