The battery completely died on this Ford Edge and therefore could not use key fob or key pad to open the door, and the mechanical key would not work either since it was completely tight (was never used in its lifetime). So to release the hood, I used flat bar stock to release the latch from the front grille and then it popped up where then I could release the safety latch.
