Fixing Sand with a Machine-Made Grid

In the video, you see a mechanical process for fighting desertification. Workers first cut branches into uniform lengths using a machine. Another machine then weaves these branches together with a thin green plastic string, creating long, flexible mats. These mats resemble small, portable fences. A separate, self-propelled machine then lays out these woven mats on the sand. As this vehicle moves forward, it automatically inserts the mats vertically into the ground. This creates a grid of small barriers standing above the sand. This technology is known as a straw checkerboard sand barrier. Its primary purpose is to stabilize the sand by reducing wind speed at ground level. This prevents the sand dunes from moving and causing erosion. By holding the sand in place, these grids also help the soil retain moisture. This creates a better environment for planting drought-resistant vegetation later on. This mechanized method is a fast and efficient way to transform desert landscapes and combat land degradation.
