Hawaii is in the process of developing a restricted plant list for domestic imports that will prevent future invasive plant introductions. Because federal law treats plants as a trade commodity, creating such a list is a surprisingly complex policy initiative. The Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species (CGAPS) has been assisting the Hawaii Department of Agriculture in developing a restricted plant list, in collaboration with industry and scientist, to help protect Hawaii from future invasive plant introductions. CGAPS staff Christy Martin and Chelsea Arnott are joined by Shahin Ansari of HT Harvey & Associates to explain the process for developing a recommended list of restricted plants.
