Nikon Noct 58mm f.95 vs Nikon 85mm F1.2 | Nikon lens review

Experience: Sheer Excitement of shooting the Nikon Noct takes over. You anticipate magic to happen.
The focus ring is smooth and great to focus with. You can eyeball it too, but better to magnify and get the focus just right when wide open.
The weight… it’s a good idea to carry a tripod only because of the noct. Its has a tiny tripod collar which come handy.
You won’t be super mobile because it’s heavy and because it’s a manual focus lens. The focus throw is long. Therefore it’s accurate. But it’s also not instant to focus.
Build quality: The noct is the most well built lens I have ever touched. It’s a legit tank. Fully metal body. And thick metal. Every part feels premium and everything moves to smoothly. It’s a made in Japan lens.
The 85 is good. But touch it and you will know the difference. It’s mostly made of plastic. But it’s a much lighter lens so it’s easier and more compact.
Image quality
Sharpness: 1. Noct is slightly softer wide open. But incredibly crazy sharp wide open. It’s soft only by its own standards.
2. Sharpness is neck to neck at 1.2/ 1.3 onwards.
3. at f5.6, sharpness is slightly better on noct. Which will you find out by zooming in 800% in the centre. So practically no difference.
CA: The noct has some CA wide open. You can see it straight against the light till f5.6.
The 85 has some CA. But at f2 it’s almost gone. By 2.8 definitely gone.
LCA:
Noct has more LCA across the f stop range.

The weight Slows you down. After some time when the excitement wanes, you realise that lack of movement costs you creatively. That freedom of movement is slightly more important than absolutely highest quality of image output.

And the lack of movement also restricts the models movement. And makes her tired. It kind of makes her a prisoner of the her space. And autofocusing lens really allows easy fluid movement of both parties and results in more engaging shooting experience.

Conclusion:
Overall both lenses are very similar image quality. But the 85 is much cheaper, lighter, compact with fast and silent and accurate autofocus.
The easy of use means you will create better stuff with the 85 if the focal length isn’t limiting for you. Image quality from the noct is top notch. But you’re paying 3 times the money for image quality matched by the 85. In fact, the 85 has better controlled aberrations.
Overall, this comparison show just how good the 85 is. It also shows that Nikons lenses are getting better each year. And most people should consider the 85 to be their noct.

However, one should see some pictures here. One should remember that the noct has a look. It’s a look. It’s uncanny to have that non telephoto width and yet have that telephoto depth. That look is hard to replicate. It’s that distinctive look combinations of focal length, shallow depth of field, character and a a strange vision sense of depth in every image the noct creates… that makes the noct stand apart as a special lens. It’s not about being better. It’s about being unique. And the noct is doing just that. Creating images that look so different and so unique that your work stands out. I will discuss that on another episode.
