Hollywood is speaking out against an AI "actress" whose creator says may be signing with a talent agency. The company behind Tilly Norwood, a fully computer-generated performer, is drawing backlash from real stars including Whoopi Goldberg and Emily Blunt amid heated debate over the implications of increased AI use in the entertainment and media landscapes. Tilly has an Instagram account with more than 30,000 followers that shares content as though she were an actual person, from coffee shop selfies to even spoofing Sydney Sweeney's controversial American Eagle ad. The creation also appeared alongside other AI characters in a video by Particle6 Productions that touted Tilly's ability to convey genuine emotion and drew its own controversy for lines including, "She'll do anything I say – I'm already in love." While many stars including Sophie Turner have taken to the comments of Tilly's IG to share their dismay, Whoopi offered her thoughts during "The View" on Sept. 29 and explained why she thinks the growing prevalence of AI isn't the right move. "People talk about people are so lonely, they don't have a connection. If you stick with this, with AI, you won't have any connection to anything but your phone," she said. Emily, meanwhile, reacted to Tilly in real time during a new interview with Variety in which she reportedly called the situation "terrifying." “No, are you serious? That’s an AI? Good Lord, we’re screwed. That is really, really scary," she said, upon being shown an image of Tilly. "Come on, agencies, don’t do that. Please stop. Please stop taking away our human connection.” Particle6 founder Eline Van Der Velden previously defended Tilly but clarified in a later Instagram post that the creation "is not a replacement for a human being." SAG-AFTRA also weighed in, posting a statement denouncing "synthetics" as an alternative to human performers. "To be clear, 'Tilly Norwood' is not an actor, it's a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers — without permission or compensation," the statement read in part.
