Italian authorities arrested nine people linked to three charitable organizations suspected of raising 7 million euros for Hamas over two years. Police say over 71% of donations ostensibly for Gaza civilians were diverted to Hamas's military wing and families of suicide bombers. Mohammad Hannoun, President of the Palestinian Association in Italy, was arrested and described as head of the Italian Hamas cell. Authorities seized over 8 million euros in assets. The investigation began after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, analyzing suspicious financial transactions. Funds were sent through complex triangulation operations via bank transfers to Gaza-based associations declared illegal by Israel. Italian prosecutors collaborated with other EU countries as Hamas remains on the European Union's terror list.
