We all saw what LOOKED LIKE a screenshot of a Target ad embedded in a ChatGPT result over the weekend. In fact, it wasn’t a formal ad at all, but a collaboration between the retailer and OpenAI, integrating some Target services into the chatbot.

OpenAI researcher Mark Chen conceded that the integration was a misstep noting that “anything that feels like an ad needs to be handled with care. But regardless, ads are clearly coming soon to services like ChatGPT. So the question is, are audiences ready for them? And what will the backlash look like when it inevitably arrives?
