Two new NIH grants awarding over $10 million to UIC will help Jun Ma and colleagues in the College of Medicine investigate the use of a smartphone app, an AI voice assistant and other technologies to diagnose and treat depression.

The researchers hope these digital tools will both broaden access to psychiatric care and help realize the promise of precision psychiatry, where health care is more personalized, predictive and preventive.

In one study, they’ll use BiAffect – an app developed by UIC researchers that measures cognitive health through changes in typing behavior. A clinical trial will then test whether patients with both depression and cognitive symptoms benefit more from a two-drug combination.

Another study will test Lumen – an app on the Alexa device that guides patients through problem-solving therapy for depression. Researchers will combine it with a video anti-obesity program to see if treating both conditions together is more effective.
