In 1943, as World War II still raged across Europe, three of the most powerful men on Earth met face to face in Tehran: Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Joseph Stalin.

Known as the Tehran Conference, this historic meeting marked the first time the “Big Three” gathered together. On camera, the atmosphere looked relaxed. The leaders laughed, exchanged jokes, and posed confidently as united allies fighting a common enemy—Nazi Germany.

But beneath the smiles was something far more complex.

Each leader arrived in Tehran with his own vision of the postwar world. Churchill worried about Soviet expansion. Roosevelt hoped cooperation could prevent future global conflict. Stalin focused on securing Soviet dominance in Eastern Europe.

While the war against Hitler required cooperation, trust between the allies was fragile. Many of the tensions discussed—or deliberately avoided—in Tehran would later explode into decades of rivalry, suspicion, and geopolitical struggle known as the Cold War.

This short moment of laughter captures a powerful historical irony:
