In the dim glow of twilight, Thomas hears a rustling in the underbrush. Suddenly, Ben, one of the Runners, stumbles out of the woods, drenched in sweat, his skin pale and pulsing with black veins. His eyes are wild. With a guttural scream, he lunges at Thomas, knocking him to the ground.

As others rush to pull him off, they see the grotesque mark on Ben’s chest—a deep sting wound, oozing black. He’s been stung by a Griever. The other Gladers freeze. This is a death sentence.

Ben thrashes, incoherent, spitting blood and rage. He cries out things that make no sense—visions, flashes of memory, twisted truths. The infection is taking over, turning him violent and mad.

He is shoved into the Maze. The doors slam shut. Silence returns.
