My experience and what i did to overcome social anxiety. There is a common theme with most SAD sufferers which is that they spend so much of their time avoiding interactions with people. As someone who has suffered from SAD for my entire adult life, I can assure you that this is the exact opposite of what you should be doing. SAD, like most anxieties, is a distortion in your brain of a perceived threat. The more you run away from whatever it is you fear, the scarier your brain believes it to be. I'm sure you've heard this advice before, and I know I heard it for years before I actually forced myself to begin to follow it.

The reality is that it will be terrifying. You will get unbelievably embarrassed. You will experience terrible anxiety. You will shake. You will stutter. You may have times when you run into a private room afterwards and cry. But each time that you do this, it will be a little less intense. You will realize that saying the wrong thing, spilling your drink in front of other people, or mis-pronouncing a word during a presentation isn't really the end of the world. You will come to realize that you can be imperfect and still go on. This is the challenge for SAD sufferer's. We feel as if we need to be perfect and that doing something embarrassing or making a mistake will equal the end of the world. Once you realize that it won't it gets a little less scary. Only a little though. This takes years of doing until one day you wake up and you realize you aren't quite as scared as you used to be.

My advice for you is to stop avoiding social interactions, go against every ounce of your being and invite them. Raise your hand in class. Walk up to a group of people and start a conversation. Give a presentation in front of a crowd (I can feel you shaking just thinking about this one. Take your time and work up to the larger ones!!). Do these things little by little and you will slowly start to find them a little bit easier.
