Strepsipterans, or twisted-wing parasites, are tiny insects that live most of their lives inside bees, wasps, and other insects. Only the males ever emerge to fly; females stay embedded in the host’s body, absorbing nutrients while remaining mostly hidden.

These parasitic lifestyles may sound horrifying, but they play a critical role in maintaining balance in ecosystems. Many of these insects help control pest populations and demonstrate the complex and sometimes ruthless strategies that evolution can produce.

By studying these insects, scientists gain valuable insights into immune responses, parasite-host relationships, and even medical applications. The secret lives of these hidden invaders are a reminder of how nature is full of extraordinary adaptations—even in the most unexpected places.
