🇮🇹Posta sulla costa sud-orientale dell'isola, Siracusa possiede una storia millenaria: annoverata tra le più vaste metropoli dell'età classica,[3] primeggiò per potenza e ricchezza con Atene, la quale tentò invano di assoggettarla. Fu la patria del matematico Archimede, che si pose a capo della sua difesa durante l'assedio dei Romani nel 212 a.C. Siracusa fu per secoli la città capitale della Sicilia, fino alla conquista da parte degli Arabi, avvenuta nell'878.
Trasformatasi in epoca spagnola in una fortezza, il suo centro storico, Ortigia, assunse l'odierno aspetto barocco con la ricostruzione intrapresa a seguito del violento terremoto del 1693. Durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, nell'anno 1943, venne firmato a sud-ovest di Siracusa, in contrada Santa Teresa Longarini, l'armistizio che sanciva la cessazione delle ostilità tra il Regno d'Italia e le forze alleate degli anglo-americani; passato alla storia come l'armistizio di Cassibile.[4]
Caratterizzata da ingenti ricchezze storiche, architettoniche e paesaggistiche, la città di Siracusa è stata dichiarata dall'UNESCO nel 2005, congiuntamente alle Necropoli Rupestri di Pantalica, patrimonio dell'umanità.
