First adhesive stamps in United States were issued by Alexander M. Greig's City Dispatch Post, a private New York City carrier, in Feb 1842. US postage rates were simplified in 1845. After that New York City Postmaster Robert Morris provided special stamps or markings to indicate prepayment of stamps. These postage stamps are now called 'Postmaster Provisional'.
