Tobal No. 1 is one of the many fighting games released during the mid-nineties 3D fighter boom, and perhaps one of the more under-rated ones at that.

You've probably already noticed that the artwork is by Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame but the visuals were also unique for running super smooth at 60fps, while being fully 3D, and performing natively at 640x480 when most Playstation games didn't.

Sadly the game's fighting mechanics feel a little ropey now, especially when compared to Tobal's sequel in Tobal 2. It is very easy to mis-detect alot of attacks, often infuriatingly so as you should be able to tell from this video. Regardless, the grapple system was something akin to Fire Pro Wrestling which made throws feel more authentic for me. It also offers some solid challenge from the computer opponents although there isn't much reward for completing the arcade mode either. Nork is a goddarn jerk too might I add.

Tobal No. 1 was developed by DreamFactory and published by Square Enix, copyright 1996-1997. This audio/visual capture was produced using a Roxio HD Capture Pro in 576p, with subsequent post-conversion into 720p made via Roxio VideoWave.
