ScotRail currently operate a fleet of 59 Class 170 "Turbostars", all based at Haymarket Depot in Edinburgh. An initial order for 24 three car units (170401 to 424) was placed with Adtranz in 1999, when Scotrail were under the tenure of National Express. A further 2 units (170470 and 471) were recieved as part of a compensation deal with the manufacturer. 10 more units numbered as 170425 to 434 followed in 2003/4 - these make up the Express pool along with the initial 24 units. In 2004/5, the 7 SPT pool units (170472 to 478) and 12 Suburban units (170450 to 461) were delivered.

Turbostar is the name given to a family of diesel multiple units (DMUs) built by Bombardier Transportation (previously ADtranz) at their Litchurch Lane Works in Derby, England. The Turbostar was the first new train type to be introduced after the privatisation of British Rail. The first units were ordered by Chiltern Railways in 1996 and were designated Class 168 (also known as Clubman). Since then the family has grown with the addition of the Class 170, Class 171, and the Class 172.
