Hill River is a quiet, natural stretch of coastline just south of Jurien Bay, where the river meets the ocean only from time to time.

For most of the year, the river mouth is closed by a sandbar, particularly through the warmer, drier months. After heavy rainfall or winter storm events, water pressure builds upstream and the river breaks through, flowing into the ocean. When the mouth is open, the area changes quickly — water movement increases, fishing conditions improve, and the landscape looks completely different until the sand naturally reforms and closes it again.

Hill River is a day-use only area with no camping permitted, making it a peaceful place to stop, explore the river mouth, walk the beach, and take in the raw Coral Coast scenery. Whether the mouth is open or closed, it’s a great example of how dynamic this coastline really is.
