A timeless British folk song (Scottish/English roots), "The Water Is Wide" (also known as "O Waly, Waly" or "Waly, Waly") dates back centuries, with early versions from the 1600s.
Folklorist Cecil Sharp collected and published a key version in Folk Songs From Somerset (1906), drawing from multiple sources to create the modern melody and lyrics we know today.

The imagery speaks of love's challenges: a wide river that can't be crossed (symbolizing obstacles, separation, or heartbreak), the need for a boat to carry two, and the bittersweet truth that love can grow cold and fade like morning dew.
