“Psalm 33” is a reflection on the overwhelming power of God, and also His intimate and loving nature. “(He) merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born” (Psalm 33:6). Yet “From His throne he observes all who live on the earth. He made their hearts, so He understands everything they do” (Psalm 33:14-15). In this way, God is both lofty and near; wide enough to meet our every need, and deep enough to care. He can gather provision from the farthest reaches, or He can satisfy us with only Himself.
The enduring thread that unites these two dimensions of God’s character is His word. Circumstances can change like the weather, and our affections ebb and flow. Whole kingdoms rise and fall across generations. But in every season and throughout the ages, “the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything He does. He loves whatever is just and good; the unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth” (Psalm 33:4-5). As the song declares: “it is fitting for all men to praise Him.”
