I want to share five common mistakes that self-producing artists often make when starting out. These insights come from my own experience, conversations with other musicians, and watching discussions across online communities.

𝟭. *𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗙𝗶𝘅 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴*
Many assume that pricey hardware—fancy mics, compressors, or interfaces—will instantly elevate their music. While good equipment helps, what matters more is how you use what you already have. Instead of buying new gear, invest in your skills. Learn your tools, improve through practice, read books, take courses, and focus on your production environment. A good room setup and monitoring system are far more valuable than simply adding more hardware.

𝟮. *𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗹𝘂𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀*
There's always a new plugin on the market, but chasing them won’t replace good technique. Before adding another EQ or reverb, master the ones included in your DAW. Focus on better recording methods, improve your playing, and fine-tune your performances. For example, instead of buying a new de-esser, work on mic choice, placement, and vocal technique first.

𝟯. *𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀*
Becoming a great self-producing artist takes time. Early results might disappoint, and that’s okay. Don’t compare your early mixes to tracks by top engineers or artists who’ve been refining their craft for years. Progress takes practice and patience; allow yourself time to grow.

𝟰. *𝗧𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲, 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗶𝘅 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝘁 𝗢𝗻𝗰𝗲*
Another trap is switching between artist and engineer modes during a session. When you combine roles, you often lose focus and direction. Try separating your tasks—write on one day, record on another, mix on another. This helps you stay objective and maintain creative flow.

𝟱. *𝗧𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗼 𝗜𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗔𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲*
Self-producing doesn’t mean you have to handle every aspect of your music alone. Time is limited, and outsourcing tasks like promotion or gig booking can free up your creativity. Partner with others when possible, so you can focus on what truly matters: the music.
