Boss RV-5 vs RV-6 Reverb Pedal Demo/Comparison - Modulate Mode Comparison

Описание к видео Boss RV-5 vs RV-6 Reverb Pedal Demo/Comparison - Modulate Mode Comparison

I happen to have a Boss RV-5 and an RV-6 in my possession right now, so I decided to make a video comparing the modulate modes of these pedals side by side.

I'm playing a standard Fender Telecaster in the middle pickup position (Bridge and Neck pickup together) into a Roland Cube 15XL. I'm going from the "Recording Out" jack straight into an audio interface and recording with Logic Pro X on a very clean and neutral sounding amp. No other effects are used except the Boss Reverb pedals.

Some of my thoughts on the two pedals:

RV-5 - I think the modulate mode on this pedal is very unique and I see why many people seek to own this pedal just for this mode. It is similar to some Strymon-type reverb sounds, which is attractive because it's 1/3 of the price of a Strymon. To compare these two pedals, I would say that there are some specifically unique sounds to be had from the RV-5 modulate mode that you can't necessarily get from the RV-6; For some people, it might be worth owning the RV-5 for this mode alone. The RV-5 modulate mode seems a little "harsher" - not necessarily in a bad way, but wetter and brighter when set at the same levels as the RV-6. I noticed the RV-5 is a little more noisy and grainy sounding as well when the parameters are set very high.

RV-6 - I think the modulate mode on this pedal sounds just as lush and beautiful, though different. To my ears, the RV-6 has more clarity in the modulate mode and is slightly more subtle than the RV-5 when set at the same level. It seems to be more "tame" and the setting parameters (such as effect level and time) have to be increased to get a similar sound to the RV-5, although you can still get the huge reverb sounds from the RV-6. With that said, I think this pedal is easier to control and make subtle adjustments to the reverb sound. If I only had to have one of these pedals, I would keep the RV-6 as it also has the shimmer mode that when set with low tone parameters, can have some very unique sounds. The fact that the RV-6 has a reverb+delay mode and can be used as a second delay pedal on a pedal board with limited space is a huge plus for me as well.
