The extraordinary story of a common man's struggle against deep-rooted social prejudices like child marriage in an innovative way.
This struggle is not new.
Two hundred years ago, Raja Rammohan Roy, who fought tirelessly against inhumane practices like sati, child marriage and polygamy, once said that true development of society is impossible without women's rights and education. Similarly, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, who fought for women's education and widow remarriage, wrote an important work called 'The Evils of Child Marriage' (1850) on the terrible consequences of child marriage, and whose efforts led to the enactment of the Age of Consent Act of 1891, which fixed the minimum age of marriage at 12 years - said that child marriage not only harms girls physically and mentally, but also sets the entire society back.
Today, following the path shown by those greats, a primary school teacher, Debashis Mukherjee, has become a 'rose beauty'. Wearing a pink lehenga, tying a ghungur on her feet, she is campaigning against child marriage and child abuse through dance and song. The message is reflected in the lyrics of her song:
“Don’t marry girls before 18 years of age, don’t put them in danger as parents. If you marry girls at a young age, they will get sick, you will be the ones who will suffer if they suffer.”
This teacher from Majipur village in Khanakul, Hooghly, has walked 40 kilometers to reach Vidyasagar’s birthplace, Birsingh, and his campaign is also going on in Delhi’s Parliament, Ayodhya, Patna, Kolkata and Darjeeling. He says, “A teacher’s responsibility is not only in the classroom, but also to make society aware.”
