When someone says “plasmas” in a conversation about medicine, what usually comes to mind is “blood plasma”, the fluid in which blood cells and platelets reside. Plasma also refers to ionized gases containing electrons, ions, radicals and neutral atoms and molecules. This gas-plasma is now also a part of the medicine conversation, an emerging field called plasma medicine. In plasma medicine, the reactivity produced by a gas-plasma, when applied to living systems, can alter the physiology in a variety of ways. Gas-plasmas can kill bacteria and selectively kill cancer cells, while also stimulating immunogenic responses. How gas-plasma produces these biological effects is the focus of research worldwide.

In this video, Prof. Katharina Stapelmann of North Carolina State University describes her research into how gas-plasmas interact with living systems and organic molecules, charting a path to when gas-plasmas will be used everyday in doctors’ offices.
