For the fourth game running Barcelona failed to keep a clean sheet, as a 1-1 draw with Napoli on Wednesday in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League last-16 left their tie hanging in the balance. While the league title looks out of reach with Real Madrid eight points ahead, the Blaugrana can, at least temporarily, move into second with a win against a Getafe side they have defeated just once across the last four top-flight H2Hs (W1, D3).
Barça did at least keep a clean sheet in all of those meetings, but adding to that trend looks unlikely as they’ve conceded 14 goals across their last five home league games (W2, D1, L2). There’s plenty of history on Barcelona’s side here however, as they’ve never lost against Getafe on their own turf (W16, D4).
Mid-table Getafe have lost just one of their last five matches (W2, D2), though the Azulones were pegged back in a 1-1 draw with Villarreal last time out. José Bordalás’ men may have half an eye on the European places as they trail the top-six by just six points pre-round, though they can’t afford a repeat of the ill-tempered draw in the reverse fixture that saw two players and a coach receive red cards.
Another stalemate can’t be ruled out though, as seven of Getafe’s last ten away matches in La Liga have ended level (W1, L2), finding the net in eight of those matches. That contributes to an attack that’s only been outscored by the top-six and Villarreal, and could be the deciding factor in whether they qualify for Europe for the first time since 2019.
Players to watch: A goal from Barcelona’s İlkay Gündoğan could be a sign of entertainment as his last five league strikes have come in matches that produced at least three goals. Linked with Barcelona for a summer switch, Getafe’s on-loan forward Mason Greenwood may look for an early goal to impress given four of his five league goals for the club have come in the first-half of matches.
Hot stat: Barcelona have scored a league-high 16 goals beyond the 80th minute.
