Our journey to Beli Lena, Kitulgala, and the days of Balangoda Manawaya

Nestled amidst the scenic landscapes near Kitulagala, the Belilena Cave sits at an elevation of 2000 feet above sea level. This significant site is linked to the ancient Balangoda Man, believed to have inhabited altitudes reaching 2000 feet (609.6 m) above sea level, dating back approximately 32,000 years.

Home to the prehistoric 'Balangoda Man' (Homo sapiens balangodensis), the expansive Belilena Cave holds archaeological treasures, including skeletal remains discovered by Sri Lankan paleontologist Paul Deraniyagala, dating back 16,000 years. Other caves like Fa Hien-Lena and Batadomba-Lena contribute to the rich history, providing evidence dating back to around 37,000 BP and 31,000-18,000 BP, respectively.

The Balangoda Man is characterized by distinctive physical features such as thick skulls, prominent supraorbital ridges, depressed noses, heavy jaws, short necks, and notably large teeth. Skeletal fragments from various cave sites occupied across different periods suggest a rare biological affinity over a span of approximately 16,000 years, indicating a possible biological continuum with present-day Vedda indigenous people.
