Holtzapffel No. 2410, built in 1892, demonstrating a Holtzapffel spiral/spherical slide rest on an elliptical box lid. The gear train was reversed so that the headstock drives the slide rest and automatically advances the cutter around the corner of the lid.

Holtzapffel No. 2410 is equipped with a very rare slow speed drive system which allows this operation to be done fully automatic.

Notice the gear train on the front of the slide rest. It has a tumbler which allows the direction to be reversed.

The universal joint was missing from the kit so the Plumier Foundation staff duplicated this one using No. 2195 as a sample.

The power is taken off of the gear train on back of the headstock and transferred to the slide rest through the shaft. There is a set of bevel gears under the apron that change the direction of the motion 90 degrees and bring it to the outside of the apron. This set of gears includes an tumbler gear set which allows the direction of the slide rest’s motion to be changed. This set of gears on the front of the aprons also reduces the speed yet again before sending it to the worm which drives the spherical action.

The elliptical chuck operates by means of an offset cam ring and a moving slide.
