Billy Strings plays a brand new unreleased song called "My Alice" live in concert before a sold-out crowd at the Camp Winnarainbow benefit concert at Herbst Theater in San Francisco, California on September 29, 2022. He debuted the song a few days earlier at the Billy Strings' Renewal Festival in Buena Vista, Colorado. Joining him in this performance were Eleanor Whitmore (fiddle) and Chris Masterson (guitar).

Strings performed as part of a songwriters' circle at Toward The Fun(ds): A Concert Benefitting Camp Winnarainbow. The camp, founded by Wavy Gravy, is a kids' summer camp focused on circus, juggling, acting, songwriting, and clown performance. It provides scholarships to families in need to keep the camp open to all children. To donate in support of these efforts, please visit https://www.campwinnarainbow.org/donate/.

My Alice lyrics:

Early in the fall back deep in the woods
The first hint of frost is upon you
About a mile beyond the field stone wall
It's not hard to get lost if you want to

Too far from the city to see the white lights
I move in the shadows under cover of night
Too far from the highway to blow a flat tire
So I stare in the ashes in the fire

Well John Saint Paul is a well known man
Of wealth in his skyscraper palace
He likes his old Cadillac prepped for long drives
I don't like how he looks at my Alice

I work his garage with a wrench and my glove
Bring the stench of his gasoline home to my lovе
She swears once again shе has all she desires
As I stare in the ashes in the fire

One day late last week when I got the word
The boss needs his Caddy all steady
I remembered his eyes all over my wife
As I carefully got my tools ready

What a terrible shame, should he ever break down
With me on his trail, and so far from town
If his brakes were to fail, if he blew out a tire
And I stared in the ashes in the fire

Well John Saint Paul is a well-known man
Of wealth in his skyscraper palace
He likes his old Cadillac prepped for long drives
I don't like how he looks at my Alice
I don't like how he looks at my Alice

Billy Strings official bio:

Michigan-born and now Nashville-based, Billy Strings is a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and musician, who arrived on the scene as “one of string music’s most dynamic young stars” (Rolling Stone). Strings is in the midst of a triumphant year after winning Best Bluegrass Album at the 63rd Grammy Awards for his critically acclaimed record, Home. Produced by Glenn Brown, the record also led Strings to top Billboard’s 2020 year-end charts in both Bluegrass categories—Top Bluegrass Artists and Top Bluegrass Albums—and continues to receive widespread critical acclaim. Of the release, The Associated Press proclaims, “it is his creative musical storytelling, paired with solid vocals on Home that should seal the deal, pleasing fans of the genre and creating some new ones…the perfect blend of pure talent and pluck,” while The Wall Street Journal declares, “Billy Strings has clearly emerged as a premier guitar flatpicker of this era.” Since his debut, Strings has been awarded Guitar Player of the Year and New Artist of the Year at the International Bluegrass Music Awards, selected as one of Rolling Stone’s “New Country Artists to Know” and performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and PBS’ “Bluegrass Underground.” Known for his electric live shows, Strings will continue his extensive headline tour throughout 2021 including upcoming shows in Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, Denver, Austin, Atlanta and Nashville among several others.

Official Show Announcement:

Toward The Fun(ds): A Concert Benefitting Camp Winnarainbow

On September 29th, Steve Earle hosts an intimate songwriters circle, inviting Emmylou Harris, the Mastersons, and a surprise musical guest to gather in support of Camp Winnarainbow—a circus & performing arts haven for young people, founded in 1975 by Hippie icons Wavy Gravy and Jahanara Romney. Join us in celebrating the transformative role Camp Winnarainbow has played in the lives of generations of young people with this special night of music.

The Mastersons are singer-songwriters/multi-instrumentalists Chris Masterson and Eleanor Whitmore. Longtime members of Steve Earle's band, the married musical twosome make inspired albums of their own humanistic songs.

Toward The Fun(ds) will support Camp Winnarainbow's future providing performing arts education and leadership skills to children. For over 40 years, kids, teens and adults have run away to join the circus at Camp Winnarainbow in the beautiful hills of Mendocino County. Campers learn performing arts skills like trapeze, juggling, clowning, unicycling, stilt walking, and songwriting.
