The Hollies - Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress - Guitar Cover - Bass Cover - Drum Cover

Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress was recorded between 16-30 July 1971 during the sessions for their 11th studio album, Distant Light. The style of the song was somewhat influenced by what CCR had been doing. (And I'll reiterate, it's only somewhat influenced, y’know like how it’s got guitars, bass, and drums, and 4 chords. But for some reason John Fogerty filed a lawsuit which was settled out of court, and somehow he gets half the proceeds of the song, which is just nonsense.)

The basic track of one guitar, bass, and drums, was recorded by Allan Clarke, Bernie Calvert, and Bobby Elliott. It sounds to me like Allan double tracked his guitar part, which plays throughout the entire song. Tony Hicks did not play guitar on the basic track, but later overdubbed 2 guitar parts to add depth to Allan’s riff, and I believe those were double tracked as well, giving us 6 guitar tracks total. When playing live, Tony combines his 2 parts and plays them together, but the clarity of the guitars on the original song leads me to believe that they were recorded separately. Terry Sylvester is not present on the recording.

Allan plays a Telecaster on the original recording, but I ended up using my Guild Thunderbird because the Squier Strat just sounded too muddy, and I couldn’t get that crisp percussive sound on it. So my tone sounds quite a bit different from the original on the Guild, but I still think it sounds pretty good.

I recorded everything through my Vox AC30CC2X with a WA-47 Condenser mic.
