Well this is something new: Romanian Whisky!
A friend of mine is from Romania, and he was recently visiting home, and he picked up a few bottles from the Carpathian Distillery. I'll admit, I hadn't heard of the Carpathian Distillery or romanian Whiskey beforehand, but he cracked open a few bottles, and it was actually pretty impressive. He actually lent me this bottle to do a review, the Single Malt aged in a Feteasca Neagra Cask.
The Distillery has plenty of cask options, but this one caught my eye as the wine cask is quite unique and gave the whiskey a lot of colour and flavour. The Distillery actually owns the vineyards where the wine was grown, so it's a proper Romanian Operation, with all the grains being Romanian, and the distillation and aging all taking place in Romania.
The Carpathian distillery, named after the Carpathian Mountains, has been in operation since 2017, and produces double distilled single malt under the care of head distiller, Allan Anderson, who has worked in the whiskey bustiness in scotland, Ireland and now Romania for three decades, with the last eight years being at Carpathian.
This is bottle 340 of 417, from Cask 3218, so it's a double distilled single barrel single malt, coming in at 46%ABV, with no age statement, but natural colour and it spent its entire life in Feteasca Neagra casks, so let's get to the tasting notes!
Carpathian Single Malt Feteasca Neagra cask Tasting Notes
Nose
Spicy roasted malt, with black pepper, cloves and a really sweet wine influence. Think black cherry, candied strawberries. Sitting with it some more, I get ginger snap cookies, some oak spice and wine tannins.
Palate
Quite an intense palate, with roasted grains, lots of wine influence and spices, not baking spices, but christmas spices, more of the cinnamon, clove and nutmeg from the nose, as well as some dried orange peel. The wine influence brings candied red fruits, tannins and charred oak spice.
Finish
Surprisingly long on the finish for a 46% whiskey, with the wine tannins and spices slowly fading. There's no bourbon influence, but I did get some vanilla after a breath.
Overall, this is a really nice whiskey, and I was surprised that it had such depth of flavour from a relatively unknown whiskey region. Do I think Romania will overtake Ireland or Scotland in producing world-class whiskeys? No, but they seem to be making great stuff nonetheless!

I'm a total whiskey nerd and this channel is all about Whiskey, Whisky, Bourbon, Rye, Pot Still Whiskey and Single Malt Whiskey. I'm always on the hunt for the best whiskey and love making whiskey review videos. My passion is for Irish whiskey, but I'm open to looking for the best Bourbon or the best scotch too!
I'm an Irishman, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying whiskeys from all around the world, from Kentucky bourbon to Japanese single malts. I also love making cocktails, especially whiskey cocktails (or whisky cocktails) and really enjoy taking a classic recipe and adding my own twist to it, or making simple, 3 ingredient cocktails
