How to Remove Breakaway Shear Security Nuts | Fasteners 101

In this video, one of our resident fastener specialists talks about breakaway shear security nuts. These loss prevention fasteners have a hex nut portion that breaks off, leaving behind a cone or dome shaped nut that have no indentations on it like tri-groove nuts do. Our specialist will try to remove the previously installed shear nuts with a DeWalt Grinder to see if they can be removed at all.

Now a grinder may not be the only way, but it's an effective way to undo a mistake, should anyone accidently install the breakaway nut in a bad spot. It's also very unlikely anyone will have a grinder in their pocket to undo shear nuts.

Breakaway shear nuts are often used on street signs and other secure applications.
