This 1936 Silly Symphony is thought to be a precursor to Dumbo, but the story that inspired that tale wasn’t written until 1939 by Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl. There are some striking similarities in the storylines, however, namely an elephant with a physical insecurity that others make fun of, but actually ends up being highlighted as a beautifully unique characteristic 🐘

The stories of Bianca in the Disney studio office are hard to hear, but it was the reality of women working in a “man’s” position in the 1930s. Many men felt threatened by a woman doing what they do. Bianca was also paid significantly less than her male counterparts. But her stories and contributions to several Disney projects added a level of honest, poignant humanity that was desperately needed amidst gag after silly gag that the men in the office continually offered up. She was needed. And so she stayed, for awhile.
