What is EL wire?
The “EL” in EL wire is short for “electroluminescent” - aka it uses electricity to make light!

How does it work?
At its center, EL wire has a thick copper wire covered by a special material that glows when electricity flows through it. A thin copper wire spirals around that, and then the core is surrounded by two layers of protective plastic. The outermost layer is colored to add that neon-like glow! When the power turns on, electricity jumps between the copper wires and through the glow material, lighting it up.

What’s the difference between EL wire and neon?
Because EL wire uses electroluminescence to make light, it doesn’t get hot - meaning it’s cool to the touch and the eyes. Neon signs have a gas inside them called neon, which reacts when it gets zapped with electricity, making the sign glow!
