There are many things to see in downtown Atlanta, but everyone needs to visit Centennial Olympic Park. Located at 22 acres, the park is Georgia’s tribute to the 1996 Summer Olympics and it offers a lot of entertainment for visitors.
Here’s what you can see at the park:
A beautiful fountain called Fountain of Rings
An Olympic museum, which is home to many artifacts from those games including gold medals and athlete uniforms
The Coca Cola Plaza, which is a great place to take pictures and enjoy food from Coca Cola vendors
Various features designed by world famous architect Philip Johnson
In 2005, ACOG's CEO Billy Payne created the Olympic Park. He envision it as a central gathering place for visitors and spectators from around the world during the Olympic Games. With the Olympics taking place in 1996, ACOG wanted to collaborate on plans to improve the park. They decided to hold a design competition. Landscape Architect EDAW, in partnership with Beers/Russell, were selected to design and build the park by the Georgia World Congress Center Authority.
The Centennial Olympic Park was constructed in two phases. The first phase was completed just in time for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games at a cost of $28 million.
During the Olympics, the park was home to sponsor exhibits, featured entertainment and hosted medal presentations. Phase II construction began soon after the Olympics were over and was completed during the following year.
