History:
In ancient times, there lived a monk named Drukpa Kunley, renowned for bringing Buddhism from Tibet to Bhutan. He earned the moniker "Divine Madman" for his unconventional teaching style and humorous, sometimes provocative songs.

Legend has it that he arrived in Punakha to rid Dochula of a troublesome demon.Using what he whimsically called the "Flaming Thunderbolt of Wisdom," the Divine Madman defeated the demon. This special power, symbolized by his private part, was believed to have the ability to calm both male and female demons, bringing them under control. The phallus and its creative energy were thought to be uniquely linked to him.

During this encounter, he exclaimed "Chi Mi," which means "no dog," hence naming the temple. In 1499, Kunley blessed the place. Later, his relative, the 14th Drukpa hierarch Ngawang Choegyel, built the Buddhist monastery in his honor. This "Flaming Thunderbolt of Wisdom" is believed to be the inspiration for the Phallus, the emblem of Chimi Lhakhang.

Many believe that the temple possesses the ability to bestow fertility upon couples struggling to conceive. Women seeking to become pregnant would traditionally walk around the temple three times, carrying a wooden phallus, as a part of the fertility blessing ritual.
